Bosnia-Herzegovina is a country that was formerly part of the Yugoslav Federation. Today an independent state, it is rapidly growing both economically and as a tourist attraction. The capital, Sarajevo, is home to the country's principal airport (Sarajevo International Airport) and is also a fascinating and historic city. Sarajevo's Old Town, Bascarsija, is one of Europe's oldest market places, having been a trading place since the 15th century, when it formed a crossroads on trading routes from Asia and western Europe.
Further afield, Bosnia Hercegovina has several other historic attractions. The historic bridge of Stari Most at Mostar is a symbol of where two cultures - east and west - meet. Its stone is Dalmation but its design Ottoman - an indicator of the close historical and cultural links the area has with Turkey and the Middle East. Mostar is the largest city in Herzegovina and well worth visiting for its historical important and architecture alone.
Sun worshippers and those looking to enjoy sun, sea and sand won't be disappointed by Bosnia Herzegovina, either. Towns such as Neum, on the Adriatic coast, offer sandy beaches and fun, affordable holidays in the sun. Located between Split and Dubrovnik, it's easy to get to as well.
Those seeking a more active holiday should consider visiting the Sutjeska National Park. Home to Bosnia's highest peak (2,386m) it is also the site of one of Europe's last primeval forests and provides almost unlimited opportunities for walking, climbing and other outdoor sports. Another interesting place to visit is Tuzla, whose name means 'Place of Salt' in Turkish. Situated close to the Croatian and Serbian borders in the north-east of the country, Tuzla is home to a museum that tells the story of salt production on Tuzla.
