UK Car Rentals Booming & Brits Holiday At Home

A new survey by car rental broker Auto Europe has found that there has been a “sharp rise” in UK car hire bookings during school holiday periods in 2009.

Car rental bookings for the February half term and for the Easter holidays are currently running at double the level seen in 2008 – a sure sign that Brits are choosing to holiday in the UK, rather than venture overseas.

Credit crunch belt tightening may be part of the reason for this, but it is almost certain that the current weakness of the pound against the Euro isn’t helping either. Where previously you might have got around €1.30 for each pound, now the high street exchange rate is closer to 1:1, making a European holiday much more expensive than it was last year.
