Claim to Fame: Portugal’s 2nd-busiest international airport.
Faro Airport is the second-busiest international airport in Portugal – after Lisbon International Airport. Its location means that Faro Airport is especially popular with low-cost airlines operating flights aimed at the Algarve holiday market. The population of the Algarve doubles in summer thanks to an influx of tourists from countries such as the UK, Germany, Holland and Ireland.
Despite its name, Faro Airport is located some distance away from the town of Faro. The nearest town to the airport is Portimao, which is just a short drive away from popular Algarve resorts such as Albufeira, Vilamoura and Lagos.
Faro Airport itself provides comprehensive terminal facilities – including car hire, bus and taxi pickup points, shops, airport parking and currency exchange. The airport also has ATM for cash withdrawal, facilities for internet access and both a pharmacy and a post office.
