Electric car hire is becoming increasingly popular with business customers, according to reports from several major international car rental companies.
Hiring an electric car also allows you to try it properly before deciding whether to buy one – without a salesman breathing down your neck.
A number of major car rental companies are now offering electric car rental but availability is very limited and the service is only offered in certain locations, usually capital cities and major airports.
We’ve scoured the web to put together a list of all the companies currently offering electric car hire, together with the locations at which they are available. If you know of any more, let us know.
Note: Car hire companies have very limited numbers of electric cars and are reporting high levels of demand – so availability may be restricted.
November 2011: Hertz currently offers electric car hire in London, Washington DC, San Francisco and New York.
Electric cars available from Hertz include the Nissan Leaf, Chevrolet Volt and Smart Electric Drive – not all cars are available at all locations.
The company plans to expand this offering to new locations including Shanghai over the next year and is reporting massive demand for its electric car hire fleet.
November 2011: Europcar is currently offering electric car hire at the following UK branches:

London Gatwick Airport
Kings Cross Railway Station
Marble Arch (London)
Europcar is currently offering one electric model, the Peugeot iOn. At present (Nov 2011), electric cars are only available on single day hire to avoid the need for customers to recharge the cars themselves – presumably due to a lack of charging points in many areas.
Sixt started offering electric car hire from its London Fulham and Chelsea branch in mid-2010.
Sixt is currently offering one electric car model, the Citroen C1 Ev’ie – an electric version of the Citroen C1.
Enterprise Rent-A-Car is currently offering electric car hire in a number of US locations, including (as of November 2011):
California (11 branches)
New EV hire locations in Florida and Arizona are also planned. Enterprise offers the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt for hire.
