Q: How old do you have to be to rent a car?

Minimum age varies between hire companies but is always 21 or above.

Q: Do you need a special licence?

No, just a full driving licence from the country you live in.

Q: Can I rent a car with a provisional licence?

A: No.

Q: Do I need to tell the rental company I wear glasses?

A: No. As long as your eyesight meets the required standard with glasses and you wear them when driving, there is no problem.

Q: What happens if the car gets a small scrape on one side?

A: You may have to pay the repair costs up to the limit of your hire excess, unless you took out additional insurance (sometimes known as Collision Damage Waiver/Insurance). The costs may be yours regardless of whether it was your fault.

Q: What happens if I have an accident in my rental vehicle?

A: See our Accidents and Breakdowns page.

Q: What happens if my windscreen gets chipped?

A: Glass and tyre damage is often covered separately. Different terms and conditions apply with different hire companies. For specific details, check your Rental Conditions when booking.

Q: Will the car have a spare tyre in case of punctures?

A: Normally, yes. If you don’t feel confident or have problems fitting it yourself you can call out the hire companies breakdown service. Breakdown cover is included in standard hire rates.

Q: Will the car have air conditioning?

A: Air conditioning is increasingly common in hire cars – even the smallest sizes. It’s often guaranteed – look for the snowflake symbol when choosing which car to book.

Q: Will the car have reversing sensors?

A: Some do, some don’t. Reversing sensors are more common on larger cars but are gradually making their way into smaller cars.

Q: Will the car have satellite navigation?

A: It’s unlikely to come as standard unless you are renting a reasonably large and upmarket model. However, sat nav is increasingly being offered as an optional extra by hire companies, who will hire you a satellite navigation unit for the duration of your hire.

Q: Will the car have a sun roof?

A: Sunroofs are not as common as they used to be. Many new cars now come with air conditioning instead of a sunroof as standard.

Q: Can I rent a baby seat as well?

A: Most big hire companies will rent you a baby seat that will fit into your hire car. You can select extras such as baby seats after you have chosen a car from the quote results.

Q: Will the rental car have a roof rack?

A: This may be available as an optional extra but will not come as standard on any hire car. If available, you will be able to request a roof rack after you have chosen your car from the quote results.

Q: Will the rental company be able to provide a bike rack?

A: It’s unlikely, but it may be possible to request this as an optional extra with some companies.

Q: Can my husband drive a car I have rented?

A: Only drivers who register their details with the hire company are permitted to drive. The person renting the car is the primary driver. If you wish to have additional drivers, then they need to provide their drivers licence and address details to the hire company at pickup time.

Q: Can you learn to drive in a rental car?

A: No. Only drivers with full licences can drive hire cars.
